Baby body parts in sewage works | Baby body parts in sewage works |
(about 1 hour later) | |
Body parts belonging to a baby have been discovered by workers at a sewage treatment works near Hull.
Workers found the parts while cleaning a tank at Saltend Sewage Works at 1430 BST on Wednesday, police said.
Although the age and gender of the baby have not been confirmed, Humberside Police said it appeared to be "of between 30-35 weeks gestation".
Police have appealed for the baby's mother to come forward as she is likely to require medical attention.
Superintendent Christine Kelk of Humberside Police said she was "very concerned" about the mother's well-being.
In a direct appeal to the mother she said: "I appreciate that you must be feeling very confused, upset and afraid.
"Please be assured that I want to make sure you are safe and well."
Spt Kelk added that it was "impossible to speculate" how long the body parts had been in the tank, but said "it doesn't appear to be any great length of time".
A post mortem examination is due to be carried out on the remains later on Thursday.
An investigation has been opened by Humberside Police and anyone with information is urged to come forward. |
