Boy drowns on holiday in France

A teenager from Cheshire has drowned while on holiday in France.

Liam Manley, 14, is believed to have been with a friend when he got into difficulties in a lake at the resort of Saint-Estephe in Bordeaux, west France.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "A British national died while on holiday. Next of kin have been informed and we are providing consular assistance."

The head teacher of Blacon High School said Liam was an "all round sportsman" and was well liked by staff and pupils.

Head Teacher Ella Brett added: "Everyone at Blacon High will be shocked and saddened to hear of Liam's tragic death and I would like to send our heartfelt condolences to his family.

"Liam was well liked by all members of staff and pupils and had many close friends at the school.

"He was very interested in sport - particularly fooball and running - and will be remembered for his successes in the school's recent sports day, when he won the 200 metre sprint."

She said he would be remembered most for his lively sense of humour and warm smile.

The teenager joined Blacon High School in November 2006, after a short spell at Queens Park High.
