A spate of vehicle fires has been tackled by fire crews in Oxford over the weekend.

Fire officers said they believed a blaze in a garage in Kestrel Crescent in the Blackbird Leys area on Saturday morning was arson.

A van fire in Littlebury on Saturday evening was followed by a similar blaze in a van in Sandford Road in the early hours and a car fire in Hengrove Close.

No one is reported to have been injured in any of the fires.

Steve Johns, of Slade Park Fire Station, said large numbers of car fires had become uncommon.

He said: "Over the last few years, vehicle fires in our station ground have actually reduced quite a bit through a couple of initiatives, such as the abandoned car initiative.

"If members of the public see an abandoned vehicle on the side of the road they can call their district council who are duty-bound to remove the vehicle within 24 hours, or if its causing an obstruction to call the police."
