Smoke plume alert after tyre fire Tyre depot fire continues to burn
(about 10 hours later)
People in the path of a plume of smoke from a massive tyre fire in Londonderry should stay inside and shut their doors and windows, the Fire Service has said. A fire that started at midnight in a Londonderry tyre depot is still burning.
More than 10,000 tyres were on fire at a depot in the Pennyburn Industrial Estate, reported at 1220 BST. Station commander Kevin Lynch said efforts to put the blaze out were being hampered because the building is unsafe.

People in the path of a plume of smoke from the massive fire were advised to stay inside and shut doors and windows.
Mr Lynch said: "The building is structurally unstable at the moment and that is hampering our efforts to extinguish the fire.
"However, using the latest technology with the hydraulic platforms and thermal-image cameras, we can actually see inside the building and we are directing our jets using those means."

Jonathan Tate of the Fire Service said people in the Hazelbank, Ballymagroarty and Northland Road areas should close their windows.
"The wind conditions are not in our favour this morning and that is preventing the smoke plume from being dispersed," he said.
"If anyone is in the way of the plume they should keep their doors and windows closed."
