Edinburgh has topped a poll of British cities to "see before you die".

The Scottish capital came out ahead of Bath and Liverpool in a survey of 5,500 people, with residents also judged to have the "sexiest accent" in Britain.

Belfast, Glasgow and Oxford were the next most-popular cities on the list, followed by London, Cardiff, York and Cambridge.

Newcastle-upon-Tyne was deemed to be the friendliest city, followed by Liverpool and Manchester.

London was voted the least friendly city, followed by Birmingham and Glasgow.

The survey, by hotel chain Travelodge, showed that only 10% came close to knowing how many cities the UK has, at 66, while only a third correctly defined a city - a town which has been granted city status by a British monarch.

The result follows another poll by YouGov published last week which named Edinburgh as the best city to live in in the UK.

Respondents praised the city, also known as Auld Reekie, because of the impact of its industrial past, for its atmosphere and culture.

The city is currently hosting the 62nd Edinburgh International Festival and Fringe.
