More than 70 people have been killed, and many more are feared dead or trapped under the rubble of collapsed houses, after a series of powerful earthquakes struck central Türkiye shortly after 4am Monday morning. By 6:30am, Türkiye’s crisis response center, SAKOM, confirmed that at least 76 people were killed and another 440 injured in the provinces of Kahramanmaras, Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Diyarbakir, Adana, Adiyaman, Malatya, Osmaniye, Hatay, and Kilis. According to Vice President Fuat Oktay, the disaster has claimed the lives of at least 284 people, wounding another 2,323. He also stated that the earthquake destroyed at least 1,710 buildings.
Casualties have been reported in numerous Turkish provinces, Oktay said. The province Antep tops the death toll lists with at least 80 dead and 581 destroyed buildings. The earthquake also killed 70 people in Kahramanmaras, 47 in Malatya, 14 in Diyarbakir, 10 in Adana, 8 in Kilis, and 4 in Hatay.

Another 15 people were killed and at least 16 buildings destroyed in Sanliurfa, according to initial estimates by the provincial governor.  A considerable number of people remain missing in the immediate aftermath of the tremors. 
The governor of Malatya reported at least 140 destroyed or badly damaged buildings, with the bodies of 23 victims pulled from the debris so far. Over 420 have suffered various injuries across the province, according to Anadolu news agency. Türkiye’s authorities have dispatched 102 mobile base stations and 504 generators to the region. Schools in ten provinces have also been closed for one week.
In Diyarbakir province, the authorities have so far confirmed six people dead and 79 injured, with at least half a dozen buildings destroyed.
