Don Hewitt, creator of the US TV news magazine programme 60 Minutes, has died at the age of 86.

He died of pancreatic cancer at his home in Bridgehampton in New York state, his former employer CBS said.

A mixture of straight news and features, CBS's 60 Minutes was a pioneer of the now-familiar "news magazine" format.

Mr Hewitt produced the programme for over three decades from its inception in 1968.

It won many awards, including 73 Emmys, while Mr Hewitt was in charge.

He also produced America's first televised presidential debate between John F Kennedy and Richard Nixon.

His death comes just weeks after the loss of another legendary CBS news broadcaster, Walter Cronkite.
