A giant lobster, weighing in at 10lb (4.5kg), has been saved from the boiling pot after he was spotted towering above the rest of the catch.

Nobby, believed to be more than a 100-years-old, was rescued at a fish processing factory in Fleetwood, Lancashire.

Instead of being the next gourmet dish, he can now be seen swimming around Blackpool's Sea Life Centre.

A factory spokesman said he was four times the size of an average lobster.

Andrew Welsh, of the Dockside fish processors in Fleetwood, said Nobby was caught off the coast of north Wales.

He said: "We saw right away that he was a bit special."

The Sea Life Centre's marine expert Carey Duckhouse said Nobby's size indicated he had reached a ripe old age.

She said: "Nobby has been settled in next door to a large female lobster Claudette, who we reckon is about 15 years old, but there is little chance of any romance.

"Claudette's a big girl, but even she is dwarfed by Nobby, and trying to pair them up would just be too risky."

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest lobster was caught in Nova Scotia, Canada, and weighed 20.15kg (44.4lb).
