David Sycamore, 39, who lived near the cathedral, was killed in November 2008 after producing a gun on the steps. Officers who fired the fatal shots gave their evidence anonymously from behind a screen. One said he had feared "another Dunblane or Hungerford-style massacre" because Mr Sycamore had said earlier he was going to shoot people. Mr Sycamore was taking anti-depressants and had made an attempt to take his life 17 years previously, the inquest had heard. He had also told an ex-girlfriend shortly before his death that he wanted to die. The inquest saw video material showing him appearing to cock a gun and his body jerk as he was shot twice. It was discovered after his death that his gun could only fire blanks. An officer identified by his call sign Bravo Two said he had fired a single shot, as the gun was being pointed in his direction. Another officer, known as Uniform, told the inquest: "I can still shut my eyes and see the events. I'm thinking as he pulls out the gun, 'Don't do that. Oh please don't do that'. "I'm thinking, 'I've got no option. I feel I've got to fire.'." The inquest was adjourned until Thursday. |
