Students wait for exam results Figures reveal drop in A grades
(about 4 hours later)
Thousands of A and AS level students will find out their results later. The number of students getting A grades in their A Levels in Northern Ireland has gone down by almost 1%.
A level students will discover whether they have attained the grades needed to go to university. However, NI students have again outperformed their counterparts in England and Wales.
However, competition for university has increased with seven per cent more 18-year-olds opting to study rather than enter a depressed job market. The percentage of local entries with an overall A grade dropped by 0.9% to 34.5%.
Employment Minister Sir Reg Empey said it was "a significant increase". Half of NI school leavers go to university, more than in the rest of the UK. NI's A level entries increased by 4.5% to 31,374 grades, with an overall entry of 846,977 across NI, England and Wales.
