Police said they had "arrested a man in connection to a murder in Exeter". Police said in a statement that they did not know the motive for the attack and they did not believe the suspect or woman knew each other.
They have not said what the man has been arrested for or whether the man remains in custody. Officers believe they may have located the knife thought to have been used in the attack.
Supt Tom Holmes said officers were not looking for anyone else in connection with the attack. Ch Supt Dan Evans said they were not looking for anyone else and the suspect remained in custody.
