The cause of a fire which swept through a mill in Lancashire causing extensive damage is being investigated by fire service experts.

More than 50 firefighters tackled the fire which started at the mill in Moorgate Street, Mill Hill, Blackburn, just after 2100 BST on Friday.

A number of residents were evacuated and spent the night in a nearby community centre.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue said the cause of the fire was not yet clear.

Richard Edney, from the fire service, said officers were keeping an "open mind" about how the fire began, despite reports a group of teenagers had been seen in the area before the fire started.

Structural engineers visited the site earlier. One fire engine was still damping down.

There had been fears two children were inside the mill but this was not confirmed, a spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said.

The spokesman added: "Initially we thought there were two children inside the building but this proved unfounded."

A number of roads off Moorgate Road are still closed.
