Men quizzed over player stabbing Zola's shock over player stabbing
(about 16 hours later)
Two men arrested over the stabbing of West Ham footballer Calum Davenport and his mother at their home near Bedford are being questioned by police. A football manager has spoken of his shock to discover one of his players had been stabbed in both legs.
Mr Davenport, 26, had emergency surgery on both legs following the attack early on Saturday. He remained in a serious but stable condition on Sunday morning. Calum Davenport, 26, and his mother Kim, 49, are both stable in hospital in Bedford after an attack at their home in Springfield Avenue, Kempston.
A 25-year-old was arrested in Derby on suspicion of attempted murder and has been moved to Bedford, police said. Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola said: "We're very sorry about what happened. It's a terrible story."
A second man, aged 19, was arrested early on Saturday in Bedford. A 25-year-old man was arrested in Derby on suspicion of attempted murder and is being questioned in Bedford.
Bedfordshire Police said he was arrested on suspicion of being involved in causing grievous bodily harm. Mr Zola was speaking after a match between West Ham and the player's former club Tottenham Hotspur.
The force said the mother and son were set upon in the early hours in Springfield Avenue, Kempston. "We can't imagine what he has been through in these moments," he said.
The area around the house in Kempston was sealed off by police "The doctor told me that the situation is stable, he is okay.
West Ham said its thoughts were with the player and his family. "The situation will be clearer in the next few days. Now it's important that he's all right."
It is understood Mr Davenport's 49-year-old mother is recovering. Her son continues to be treated at Bedford Hospital. West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola was shocked
The former England under-21 international defender joined West Ham for £3m in 2007. Spurs manager Harry Redknapp, the player's boss at Southampton earlier in his career, said: "I know Calum. I had him on loan - a lovely lad, inoffensive and it's really sad to see what's happened to him and his mum.
He moved to the east London club from Tottenham. "Hopefully they'll pull through and be okay. You couldn't meet a brighter, more laid-back lad than him."
He had a spell on loan at Sunderland last season and has also played for Coventry City. He also had loan spells at Norwich City and Southampton while at Tottenham. The footballer, who was a multi-million pound signing and an England Under-21 international, underwent emergency surgery on Saturday morning.
Neither his nor his mother's injuries were thought to be life-threatening but both remained at Bedford Hospital.
A spokeswoman for the force said a 19-year-old man also arrested soon after the incident remained in custody at the town's Greyfriars police station.
"He was arrested on suspicion of being involved in causing grievous bodily harm," she said.
