Suspected illegal immigrants held

Fourteen suspected illegal immigrants are being held after a coach they thought was taking them into work was diverted to a detention centre. Forty-four men were driven from east London to the immigration centre in Longstanton, near Cambridge. It was part of a News of the World investigation into alleged illegal workers based in Wapping, east London. The Home Office confirmed that 14 suspected illegal immigrants had been detained and were being questioned. 'Gangmasters' investigated The Bangladeshi men believed they were being taken by coach to work on a farm for six months. The newspaper arranged for them to be taken to the detention centre instead. Two alleged gangmasters are being investigated by the UK Border Agency and the Gangmasters Licensing Authority. A spokeswoman said: "If or when we find any evidence that they have been involved in this type of activity we will arrest them." |
