Crews tackle large plastics fire Crews tackle large plastics fire
(about 11 hours later)
Firefighters remain at the scene of a large fire at a plastics recycling site at a former RAF hangar in Lincolnshire. Firecrews are in the final stages of putting out a fire at a recycling plant in a former RAF hangar in Lincolnshire.
The fire broke out at the AWS Eco-plastics factory at Hemswell Cliff at about 1500 BST. The site was evacuated. Thick black smoke could be seen for miles after the fire started at the AWS Eco-plastics factory at Hemswell Cliff at 1500 BST on Tuesday.
Several propane gas cylinders have exploded. The A631 was also closed from Harpswell Hill to Caenby Corner as a result of the fire. Early on Wednesday crews said they were damping down, but expected to be at the scene for at least the rest of the day.
Residents have been advised to keep their doors and windows closed to avoid breathing in the smoke. Dave Brocklesby of Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service said investigations would begin as soon as it was safe.
Dick Holmes from Lincolnshire Police said: "We don't yet know what started the fire but the good news is that, so far, no-one has been injured in any way." He said: "We've got fire investigation officers on site.
Witnesses said smoke could be seen from several miles away. "At this time they'll be assisting in firefighting operations and as soon as it's safe to do so they'll start talking to the owners, workers, and we'll try and build a picture up of just what's happened and what's actually caught fire."
Shortly after the fire broke out, Martin Caswell, from Springthorpe, said: "The aircraft hangar is quite big but the whole thing is ablaze from one end to the other." The site was evacuated after propane gas cylinders exploded.
The hangar is about 650ft (200m) by 325ft (100m) and 100ft (30m) high. The A631 was closed from Harpswell Hill to Caenby Corner as a result of the fire.
It is one of a number of hangars at the former RAF base at Hemswell, near Gainsborough. Residents were to keep their doors and windows closed to avoid breathing in the smoke.

Witnesses said smoke could be seen from several miles away. One person said the hangar was ablaze from one end to the other.
