A 37-year-old man is to appear before Belfast Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with the murder of John Harbinson in May 1997. A senior North Belfast loyalist has been remanded in custody charged with the murder of a man 12 years ago.
He was arrested by officers from the Historical Enquiries Team on Tuesday. John Harbinson died after being handcuffed and beaten by a UVF gang in the Mount Vernon estate.
Mr Harbinson died after being handcuffed and beaten by a UVF gang on the Mount Vernon estate in north Belfast. Gary Haggarty, 37, of no fixed abode, was arrested by officers from the Historical Enquiries Team on Tuesday.
Haggarty, who had no legal representative, said he understood the charges against him. He will appear in court again next month.
The magistrate advised him to get a legal team for his next appearance as he faced "the most serious possible matters."
