Police are making house-to-house inquiries and studying CCTV footage to help find the killer. Det Supt Peter McGuinness described the killing as a "planned assassination". A murder inquiry has begun.
A force spokesman said: "A murder inquiry has been launched after a 28-year-old local man was shot in Sheffield last night. At this stage we are keeping an open mind about a motive Det Supt Peter McGuinness
"We cannot name the man until the next of kin have been informed. The shooting is not believed to be gang-related.
"A post mortem examination will be carried out later. Detectives are examining CCTV footage and are conducting house-to-house inquiries." Officers are making house-to-house inquiries and studying CCTV footage to try to track down the killer.
Mr McGuinness, who is leading the murder investigation, said the victim, who is from the Sheffield area, had been shot through the driver's window of his car.
The Corsa then careered across Herries Road, and narrowly missed a bus, before crashing in some bushes.
"At this stage we are keeping an open mind about a motive," the officer said.
Police are looking for a red hatchback car, possibly a Seat Leon, which was seen seconds after the shooting.
It travelled down Scraithwood Drive and headed towards Wordsworth Avenue.
Mr McGuinness appealed for anyone who had CCTV in operation in the area to contact the force at the major incident room at Ecclesfield police station.
