Scotland's independent schools achieved record results at Higher with 50% of S5 pupils getting an A-grade.

The latest statistics also reveal that 91% of pupils at private schools passed their Highers at A-C grade, a rise of 1% on the previous year.

St Mary's Music School in Edinburgh, with just 66 pupils, had the highest proportion of passes while Hutchesons' Grammar in Glasgow had most A grades.

The Scottish Government said both state and private schools had performed well.

More than 95% of pupils at St Mary's Music School and the much larger George Heriot School in Edinburgh passed their Highers.

Almost 70% of pupils at Hutchesons' grammar gained an A-grade.

Judith Sischy, Director of the Scottish Council of Independent Schools, said: "The independent sector has started the school year in good heart, boosted by consistently strong exam results which are a testament to the commitment and hard work of pupils and teachers.

"The outcome for pupils is an entry to employment, further or higher education, with an opportunity to pursue their chosen careers, equipped with a portfolio of skills for life and work beyond school."
