The shooting took place in a boulevard in Navolato, Sinaloa state, said to be a popular weekend gathering place for young people. Local media said most of the victims were aged between 15 and 20. Sinaloa, which lies on Mexico's northern Pacific coast, is a drug trafficking hotspot and a stronghold for the notorious Sinaloa cartel. State spokesman Martin Robles said the gunmen fired into the crowd with AK-47 rifles on Saturday night. He said the motive for the shooting was not yet known. At least three other people were reported to have been injured. |
