A serial sniper with an air rifle has been targeting motorists passing under a bridge in County Durham, police say.

Since January 2006, 34 vehicles have been hit by air rifle pellets on the A693 at Greencroft, near Stanley.

Durham Police believe the same person is behind all the attacks, but extra patrols and specialist operations have so far failed to catch the offender.

No-one has been badly hurt, but police said they feared someone could end up being hurt or even killed.

Acting Insp Susan Murray said: "If you are unlucky enough to be a victim then pull off the main road safely, stop the car and ring 999 as soon as possible.

"We are also urging residents or people out walking their dogs to ring us if they see anyone who appears to be in possession of an air weapon of any kind.

"We are seriously concerned that if this continues someone could end up being hurt, or even killed."

Over the same period there have been 21 incidents of missiles, mainly rocks or stones, being thrown at vehicles from the same bridge.

Anyone with information about the attacks should contact Durham Police.
