Ice cream parlour made from sand

A "restaurant" has been built out of sand on Weston-super-Mare's beach to raise money for a nearby hospice.

The sand-crafted Burger King, which is only selling ice cream, took three days to build but will be bulldozed by the end of Sunday.

Organisers hope to sell 1,000 mint chocolate ice creams for £1 each, with the money going to Weston Hospice Care.

The restaurant is about 12ft (3.6m) tall, 22ft (6.7m) long and has 15 seats and a sand counter, but no roof.

Air bubbles

"The weather's held up and we've sold over 400," said Martin Ayres from Burger King.

"People have been laughing and taking photos.

"The sand is coated in a special layer and the water used to make it has had the air bubbles taken out of it, so it is sturdy and can take a reasonable amount of weight.

"As long as it doesn't rain before the end of the day we'll film it being demolished and hopefully the people of Weston can join in."

The structure was constructed by Mark Anderson, owner of Sculptures in Sand.
