Climate activists stage protests

They first staged a demonstration outside the Treasury and then at London City Airport. The protesters say the Treasury is using taxpayers' money to fund fossil fuel extraction, through its investment in Royal Bank of Scotland. They are also objecting to the planned expansion of London City Airport, which allow more flights. At the Treasury, demonstrators were wearing boiler suits and had cleaning equipment. They held up a banner proclaiming Climate Change Doesn't Take Holidays. They have pushed through the expansion of London City Airport against the wishes of the local community Anna Markova, climate camper They complained that the government has a majority stake in the Royal Bank of Scotland, which they said funded carbon-intensive industries such as tar sand extraction in Canada. Protester Nimsha Doshi said: "We're here to expose the government's role as a climate criminal, and the political system's failure to fight against climate change." Airport expansion At London City Airport, the campaigners said the recently approved 50% expansion of the airport would lead to an extra 50,000 plane journeys. Climate camper Anna Markova said: "Corporations are driving the climate change agenda. "They have pushed through the expansion of London City Airport against the wishes of the local community." The campaigners, who are camping at Blackheath until later this week, have already held protests outside the European Climate Exchange and Barclays Bank. |
