Frozen hash browns leave a bitter taste for Helen Keats, while Malcolm Rodgers considers them to be the culinary equivalent of a grey squirrel

I was an Airbnb super host for a couple of years, offering a B&B with a traditional Isle of Wight breakfast. This included eggs from my hens (often collected by the guests), locally sourced bacon, sausages, tomatoes, bread, butter and milk. Guests could also have honey made by one of my friends and homemade marmalade. The only less than five-star review I got was from a woman who said my boring breakfasts would be improved by the inclusion of hash browns (Pass notes, 3 April). Frozen, I imagine. Not that I’m bitter.Helen KeatsBrighstone, Isle of Wight

Hash browns seem to have become a regular feature in the full English breakfast. But they are indeed an American invasive item. They are the grey squirrel of the breakfast world.Malcolm RodgersWeston-super-Mare, Somerset
