It is unclear what led to the suspect's death and whether the culprit is being counted as one of the five dead. According to Louisville Police, officers were first alerted to an active shooter situation at about 08:30 local time (15:40 BST) and arrived within three minutes.
At the scene, they encountered the suspect "almost immediately" and were involved in an exchange of gunfire. It remains unclear whether the suspect was shot and killed by the officers or died at his own hand, according to Deputy Police Chief Paul Humphrey.
Two officers were wounded in the gun battle, one of whom is undergoing surgery and is in critical condition.
Mr Humphrey said that the actions of the officers "absolutely saved people's lives".

FBI agents responded to the scene and are helping local police, the bureau said on Twitter. Speaking at a news conference, an emotional Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear he knew several of the victims. His campaign is based in the same building and he is a customer of Old National Bank.
On Twitter, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said he was headed to the scene of the shooting. "This is awful. I have a very close friend that didn't make it today, and I have another close friend that didn't either," Mr Beshear said. He added that another friend was injured "that I hope is going to make it through".
"Please pray for all of the families impacted and for the city of Louisville," he added.

Witnesses have begun recounting their experiences to local media.
