Deadly earthquake hits Indonesia Deadly earthquake hits Indonesia
(20 minutes later)
At least 15 people have been killed after a powerful earthquake struck near the Indonesian island of Java. A powerful earthquake has struck off the Indonesian island of Java, killing at least 23 people, officials say.
Dozens of properties collapsed in the city of Tasikmalaya on the west of the island and thousands of people have been evacuated, officials said. Scores more were wounded and it is feared the death toll will rise as many homes have reportedly been buried under a landslide triggered by the quake.
The magnitude 7.0 quake also damaged buildings in the university city of Bandung, also close to the epicentre. More than 700 houses were badly damaged by the magnitude 7.0 quake, a social affairs ministry official told AP.
In the capital, Jakarta, 200km (120 miles) north, hundreds fled into the streets from offices and shops. The quake struck around 1500 (0800 GMT). Its epicentre was offshore, 115km (70 miles) south-west of Tasikmalaya.
Medical teams have been dispatched to the city, where damaged properties included the mayor's home and a mosque.

One eyewitness, who gave his name as Jonathan, told the BBC News website he was on the 28th floor of an office block in Jakarta when the quake struck. About 30 people are still trapped under rocks and dirt in one village after the landslide on Java's southern coast, Indonesia's official Antara news agency reported.
"I went into the meeting room and took shelter under the table. It went on for about a minute I think - scary. Some people were killed when buildings collapsed in the district of Cianjur, in Tasikmalaya and in the town of Sukabumi.

And in Bandung an eyewitness told reporters: "We were all studying and the building we were in started shaking for a few minutes and the ceiling fell." At least 27 people were injured in the capital, officials said.
Some people were killed in a rock slide on the southern coast, according to reports, while others died when buildings collapsed in the district of Cianjur, in Tasikmalaya and in the town of Sukabumi. The quake was also felt 500km away from its epicentre in Surabaya, Indonesia's second-largest city, and on the resort island of Bali.
Officials said dozens more people were injured, including at least 27 in Jakarta. Seismologists recorded a slight rise in the sea level at Pelabuhan Ratu off the west of the island following the quake, indicating there had been a small tsunami.
Medical teams have been dispatched to Tasikmalaya, nearest the epicentre, where the damaged properties included the mayor's home and a mosque.
Hundreds of people took shelter in a military base in the city, fearing aftershocks.
The epicentre was offshore, about 115km (70 miles) south-west of Tasikmalaya, at a depth of about 50km.
