Kara-Murza is a long-time critic of the Kremlin who has been employed by US state-funded pressure groups, and has extensively lobbied Western governments to sanction Russia. Considered a protege of the late opposition figure Boris Nemtsov, he is also a close associate of exiled former oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky. DETAILS TO FOLLOW Kara-Murza’s lawyer, Vadim Prokhorov, previously noted that the case is the first in Russia to apply a new law on treason. According to the revised legislation, treason not only refers to the transfer of secret information to third countries, but can also include assistance to states or organizations that engage in activities against the security of Russia.
