Driver filmed moving cones from middle of A12 in Essex Driver filmed moving cones on A12 roadworks in Essex fined
(3 months later)
A driver was captured on video moving traffic cones from a sectioned off area of an A-road before trying to cut through to the other carriageway. A driver stuck in a traffic jam has been fined after being filmed moving cones from a sectioned-off area of a dual carriageway before trying to cut through to another lane.
The pictures were taken by a driver in stationary traffic on the A12 in Essex. Footage was taken by another driver in stationary traffic on the northbound A12, at Marks Tey, in Essex on Tuesday, 18 April.
They showed the woman getting out of her car, then driving towards the gap she had created in the cones before a highways worker ordered her back. It showed the 66-year-old woman, from south London, getting out of her car, moving the cones, then attempting to drive through the coned-off roadworks section in order to join a lane of free-flowing traffic.
Essex Police said it was investigating the incident, which is believed to have happened on the northbound carriageway, close to the Marks Tey junction on Tuesday, 18 April at around 13:30 BST. National Highways said it issued the drive, with a conditional caution and fined her £100, with the money going to a road worker safety charity.
Head of roads policing Adam Pipe said "Areas that are coned off are for the safety of all road users and the road workers. Anyone who disregards them is potentially putting themselves and others at risk." The footage also showed a highways worker stepping in to order her back into the lane she had come from.
