Largest airliner in Scots first Thousands watch largest airliner
(30 minutes later)
The world's largest commercial airliner has made its first appearance in Scotland. Thousands of plane spotters gathered in Scotland to catch a glimpse of the world's largest commercial airliner.
The Airbus A380 flew over Edinburgh Airport in what has been described as an "approach and go manoeuvre". The 525-seat Airbus A380 performed a fly-through at Edinburgh and Prestwick airports as part of a tour of the UK.
It flew a few hundred feet above the runway before departing for other UK airports, including Prestwick. The plane carried out an "approach and go" manoeuvre - meaning it came in to the airport as if to land, before rising and departing.
Gordon Dewar, managing director of Edinburgh Airport, said there was a "real air of excitement" at the flypast by the 525-seat aircraft. A BAA spokesman at Edinburgh Airport said the visit of the Airbus was an "historic" moment.
"There have been many proud moments in the 30 year history of Edinburgh Airport but I think today will stand out as one of the most memorable events, both for passengers, staff and visitors alike," he added. He said the Airbus flew over the centre of Edinburgh, right over the airport and out towards the Forth Bridges. It then turned around and came back to the airport.
It came in as if to land to about 200ft off the ground, and then departed.

The spokesman said: "One of the things that stood out was just how quiet it was.
"I think everyone was genuinely surprised such a large aircraft was so quiet as it came in and took off."
