Seven people have been arrested after shots were fired in Birmingham. Seven people, including teenagers, have been arrested after shots were fired in a residential street in Birmingham.
West Midlands Police said the shooting, which happened just before 16:00 BST on Saturday in Hockley Close in Newtown, was a targeted attack. West Midlands Police said two cars and a house were damaged by gunfire in Hockley Close, Newtown, at about 16:00 BST on Saturday.
A helicopter was deployed which the force said led to the arrests of seven males, who remain in custody. A 32-year-old man, who was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, is being treated in hospital for a gunshot wound to his leg.
Officers have seized several vehicles and the area was cordoned off for forensic examinations. Police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
"We understand that this will have been alarming for local residents and we want to reassure them that we believe this was a targeted attack and we have swiftly made arrests," a force spokesperson said. Armed officers were deployed to follow a black VW Golf which left the scene after shots were fired.
There is also due to be an increased police presence in the area over the Bank Holiday to reassure locals. They then arrested five occupants, including two who had attempted to make off on foot.
A police helicopter was also deployed before the suspects, aged between 16 and 32, were arrested.
The West Midlands force said they were all held on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of a firearm.
Six remain in custody for questioning, however the injured suspect remains in hospital.
Police said the motive for the shooting was unclear but was believed to be targeted
Officers have also seized vehicles that are thought to have been involved in the incident for forensic examinations, and a cordon remains in place at the scene.
The force said the motive for the shooting remained unclear, however earlier a spokesperson said it was believed to be a targeted attack.
It added that officers were conducting house-to-house inquiries as part of their investigation.
"We know this incident has caused concern in the local community and this is entirely understandable," said Det Insp Jackie Nicholson.
"Firearms have no place on our streets and we work hard to pursue those who carry them, creating such fear and potential harm."
She said there would be extra patrols in the area and urged people to come forward with any concerns as well as information.
