Suicide bomb hits Afghan airport | Suicide bomb hits Afghan airport |
(20 minutes later) | |
A suicide bomber at the military airport in the Afghan capital, Kabul, has killed at least one other person.
Witnesses said the car bomber rammed the main gate of the airport, causing a large plume of smoke and rattling windows in the city centre.
The airport is used as a base by the Nato-led forces fighting the Taliban.
The airport has been targeted in the past by suspected Taliban militants. In 2007, at least one person was killed in a suicide bomb attack on the airport.
"It was a suicide attack outside the main gate of the military base at the airport," Nato officer Colonel Koziel Bart told AFP news agency.
"All the gates of the base have been closed and all air operations have been suspended," he said.
Witnesses described flames rising from the site of the explosion.
A shopkeeper named as Humayun told Associated Press news agency: "I saw three or four Landcruisers for the foreigners just in front of the gate... then there was a car and it hit them then blew up."
There is no word on the nationality of any victims. |
