Ukraine: Russia launches deadly missile attack on Kryvyi Rih, says mayor Russian missile strike kills at least six in Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih
(about 2 hours later)
People feared trapped in rubble from attack on five-storey residential building in central Ukrainian city Dozens wounded as people trapped in rubble after attack on apartment block and a food warehouse
Six people have been killed and dozens more wounded in a Russian missile strike on the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih, as air attacks were reported in Kyiv and other cities. At least six people have been killed and dozens more wounded after a Russian missile strike on the Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih hit an apartment block and a food warehouse in the latest Russian attacks on the country’s urban centres.
“A five-storey building got destroyed” Serhiy Lysak, the governor of Dnipropetrovsk region, said on Telegram. “There are still people under the rubble.” The missile, the only one of six fired by Russian forces that managed to breach the air defences of the home town of Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, in the centre of Ukraine, set ablaze the two buildings at 3.20am local time (0120 BST) on Tuesday.
Three cruise missiles were shot down but others got through, he said. In a short statement posted on social media, Zelenskiy said: “Unfortunately, there are dead and wounded Terrorists will never be forgiven, and they will be held accountable for every missile they launch.”
Kryvyi Rih’s mayor, Oleksandr Vilkul, said six people had died in the attack. Serhiy Lysak, the governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region, reported that a five-storey apartment building had been destroyed in the strike, leaving people trapped under the rubble.
The devastation in President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s hometown is the latest bloodshed in Russia’s war in Ukraine, now in its 16th month, as Ukrainian forces are mounting counteroffensive operations using western-supplied firepower. Kryvyi Rih’s mayor, Oleksandr Vilkul, said the missiles landed in areas that had not been of any military value.
Zelenskiy said Russia was continuing its “war against residential buildings, ordinary cities and people” and the rescue operation was continuing in the city. He said: “The rescue operation continues at two facilities that were destroyed after a Russian missile strike. There is rubble. The places where the missiles hit have nothing to do with military facilities. One place is an apartment building, the other is a food warehouse.”
Images from the scene relayed by Zelenskiy on his Telegram channel showed firefighters battling blazes as pockets of fire poked through multiple broken windows of a building. Charred and damaged vehicles littered the ground nearby. Denise Brown, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator in Ukraine, condemned the attack. “Russia’s invasion has, once again, claimed lives and brought suffering to the people of Ukraine,” she said. “This morning, an attack on Kryvyi Rih has hit a residential building, killing and injuring many civilians. International humanitarian law is clear: civilians and civilian infrastructure are not a target.”

Elsewhere, the Ukrainian capital and the north-eastern city of Kharkiv also came under missile and drone attack. Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to the head of the office of the president of Ukraine, said more than 20 people had been injured in addition to those killed.
“And this kind of thing happens every night,” he said. “Because the Russian Federation is blatantly destroying Ukraine.
“I understand that sitting thousands of kilometres away from Ukraine you can talk about ‘geopolitics’, ‘settlement’ and the undesirability of escalation for months. And allow the rampage of the ‘Russian world’. But the key decisions will still have to be made – Russia is bound to lose and sit in the dock.”
The Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, and the north-eastern city of Kharkiv also came under missile and drone attack.
“According to initial reports, the enemy used Kh-101/555 cruise missiles,” Kyiv’s city military administration said. “All enemy targets in the airspace around Kyiv were detected and successfully destroyed,” it said, adding there was no immediate information on any casualties or damage.“According to initial reports, the enemy used Kh-101/555 cruise missiles,” Kyiv’s city military administration said. “All enemy targets in the airspace around Kyiv were detected and successfully destroyed,” it said, adding there was no immediate information on any casualties or damage.

Ukraine says it has retaken several villages and made advances in its counteroffensive against Russian forces. “The fighting is tough, but we are moving forward, this is very important,” Zelenskiy said on Monday in his daily evening address. Ukraine has in recent days waged its long-anticipated counteroffensive and in his Monday evening address, Zelenskiy claimed Ukrainian forces had successfully retaken several villages.
“The fighting is tough, but we are moving forward, this is very important,” he said. “I thank our guys for every Ukrainian flag that is now returning to its rightful place in villages on the newly de-occupied territory.”
Ukraine’s defence ministry said seven settlements had been liberated in the past week of fighting in Donetsk in eastern Ukraine. “The area of the territory taken under control amounted to 90 sq kilometres,” the deputy defence minister said.
Sources reported that Russian troops had launched a large counterattack against Ukrainian forces on Monday, according to the Institute for the Study of War thinktank, potentially retaking the village of Makarivka, east of Donetsk city.
