About another dozen people, including women and children have been injured, and a number of houses destroyed. Around 20 other people, including women and children were injured in the blast in the village of Wardek, 30 km (20 miles) east of Mosul.
A number of homes were destroyed and police fear the death toll will rise as a search of the rubble is carried out.
Mosul and the surrounding area remains a stronghold of insurgents.
The militants are believed to be trying to exploit a power struggle between Kurds and Arabs in the area.
Several remote villages have been targeted - a similar attack in another village in the region last month left 28 dead.
The blast in Wardek went off around midnight (2100 GMT Wednesday).
