Version 0 of 1.

Furniture maker Ikea has recalled a series of glass vases after five people were left needing hospital treatment following breakages.

The firm has recalled white, clear and black Parodi and amber, purple and dark green Apelsin vases.

The move comes after incidents in which the Parodi vase suddenly broke while being lifted.

In each case the base broke, exposing sharp edges. Ikea said seven people in total had been injured.

It said an investigation had revealed that the internal stress in a number of vases from one supplier was higher than the recommended level.

Ongoing risk

The firm said in a statement: "Too high internal stress may increase the risk of breakage, especially if the glass is damaged in some way, for example knocked or scratched.

"Internal stresses in glass do not reduce with time. There is therefore a risk for further incidents and injuries."

The Parodi and Apelsin vases, which are 70cm high, are of the same design and both are considered to carry a risk.

Customers who have bought a Parodi or Apelsin glass vase from supplier #18347 should return it to their local store for a full refund.

The number is printed on a white sticker on the base or on the receipt.

The public is being warned that when returning their vase they should avoid placing their hands at or near the base to avoid the risk of injury.

They should also ensure the vase is securely packaged.
