Woman saves neighbour from blaze
(about 16 hours later) | |
A woman who dragged her epileptic neighbour out of a house fire in Crumlin, County Antrim, has said she is very lucky to still be alive.
Michelle Steritt rescued Veronica Thompson, 56, from her home in Camlin Gardens after local children raised the alarm at about 0300 BST on Thursday.
Ms Sterrit said she found her trapped in her living room lying on top of the fire.
Ms Thompson is being treated at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
"A neighbour's kids knocked on the door and said they thought the house was on fire because of the smoke alarm," Ms Sterrit said.
"We tried to get in, but we couldn't even hear her. I got the boy next door to kick the door in, but the smoke was so thick we couldn't get in.
"We tried to go round the back and couldn't get back in that way.
'Trapped' | |
"So I went back in the front and I could hear her asking for help.
"I got onto my hands and knees and there she was lying in the fire.
"Her feet were on fire, so I ran in and got a towel and the wee boy got me a bucket of water and I put the fire out.
"When I got in, she was trapped between the settee, the wall and the fireplace.
"She couldn't get up and was lying in the fire.
"I think the reason she didn't die was because the smoke was rising and she was lying on the floor." |
