British embassy officials are not releasing details of the death until the person's family have been informed, a Foreign Office spokesman said. Employees at the resort's five-star Riu hotel said the man had been involved in a "very forceful" argument with a woman in his room.
Every year more than four million tourists visit the resort, on Mexico's Atlantic coast. A woman believed to be the man's girlfriend, who has not been named, is being interviewed by police.

A spokeswoman for the attorney general's office in the state of Quintana Roo told the Associated Press agency: "The only thing that hotel employees and guards have said is that the couple had a very forceful argument."
Police were investigating the possibility of a scuffle before the fall, the spokeswoman added.
The hotel, which has more than 500 rooms, is used by British tour operator Thomson.
The man's body was recovered by officials from the state prosecutor's office.
A post-mortem examination is expected to take place.
