Two men have been questioned in connection with an assault in County Down which left a man with serious injuries, police have said.

The men, aged in their 50s and 30s, have been released on police bail.

A man was beaten by a five-strong masked gang wielding pick-axe handles and baseball bats in a flat in Firmount Crescent, Holywood, early on Saturday.

The victim, aged in his early 40s, remains in a serious, but not life-threatening, condition in hospital.

Police said they were working to establish a motive but at the moment they do not believe there was any paramilitary involvement.
