The threat from dissident republicans remains "severe", PSNI Acting Chief Constable Judith Gillespie has said.

It follows the discovery of a 600lb bomb in a border area this week and reports that dissidents may have a second large device.

Relatives of a police officer in Londonderry were also targeted with devices being left at two homes.

"We don't say that lightly - it is a severe threat to police officers that's the target," she said.

"If you look, for example, at what happened in Derry in the last couple of days when a police officer from the area serving the community, their family was targeted, was absolutely despicable."

Mrs Gillespie said police needed their extra powers to help keep the public safe.
