A 19-year-old woman from Greater Manchester has drowned while on holiday in Kenya, the Foreign Office confirmed.

Siobhan Meadwell, from Billinge, Wigan, died while on a boat trip from Mombasa, where she had been staying.

A Foreign Office spokesman said her boyfriend was also injured but was released from hospital on Saturday. Two others were also involved.

The spokesman said: "We can confirm a British national of that name drowned off the coast of Mombasa."

He said Miss Meadwell died on Tuesday.

Police in the UK confirmed officers had visited her family to inform them of her death.

The spokesman added: "Three other British nationals were involved, one, a male was hospitalized, but released on 12 September."

"Her next of kin have been informed and are being given consular assistance."

Mombasa is Kenya's second largest city, after the capital Nairobi.
