A father was stabbed to death during an act of "pure revenge" as he went to visit his newborn son with his daughter, a court has heard. Amateur boxer John "King" Abbey, 26, died at Mayday Hospital, Croydon, south London where his partner Natra had given birth earlier on the same day. Mr King was allegedly attacked by Charles Acquaah, with whom he had earlier argued, the Old Bailey heard. Mr Acquaah, 22, of Greenside Road, Croydon, denies murder. Brian Altman QC, prosecuting, said Mr Abbey was waiting for a bus in London Road, Croydon, with his three-year-old daughter in January. He said: "Sadly, she bore witness to her father's murder." Mr Altman alleged that his daughter identified the attacker as Mr Acquaah. Mr Abbey and Mr Acquaah had met by coincidence on the morning of the incident, the court heard. Mr Abbey, who boxed for Ghana in the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, was seen to push Mr Acquaah away with the palms of his hands. In the months leading up to this incident, they had been arguing over a financial arrangement, the court heard. Mr Acquaah claims that he was acting in self-defence. |
