Elderly pair killed in road crash

Two elderly women were killed when their car crashed into another vehicle on Saturday.

An 87-year-old woman died at the scene and another woman, aged 71, died in hospital following the collision on the A71 near Strathaven, South Lanarkshire.

Strathclyde Police said a 78-year-old women involved in the crash was in a serious condition at Hairmyres Hospital, East Kilbride.

A spokesman said that the crash happened at about 1620 GMT.

A further three men and a woman needed treatment for minor injuries as a result of the accident.

The road was closed for several hours and diversions put in place but it has since reopened.
