An inquiry has started after the driver of a car being followed by police died in a crash with another vehicle.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has been informed following the collision at Farningham, near Dartford, Kent, on Saturday morning.

A BMW car was in a collision with a Volkswagen Passat travelling on Scratchers Lane off the A20.

Police had earlier tried to speak to the BMW driver at a nearby garage forecourt, but the car left at speed.

The lone driver, who was in his 40s, was cut free from the BMW by firefighters.

Attempts were made by ambulance crews to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead at the Darent Valley Hospital, near Dartford.

The three people in the other vehicle suffered minor injuries and were checked over at hospital as a precaution.
