A motorist had a lucky escape when his car came off the road, landed on a railway track and was struck by a train in Wiltshire.

The driver managed to get out of the car before it slid down the embankment near Salisbury at about 0520 BST.

The car was hit by the 0515 Salisbury to London Waterloo service at Broken Cross, near the A338.

Six passengers were on the train but none were hurt. It has affected rail services through Salisbury.

The driver is thought to be 22-years-old and from Manchester.

Rail line blocked

Mick Bagnall, from Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Luckily when we got there we found that there were no casualties involved."

He said the car had appeared to have hit a wall opposite the bridge and ended up on a ledge, before sliding down the bank and on to the track.

A spokesman for South West Trains said: "As a result of the incident the line between Salisbury and Basingstoke is blocked in both directions.

"Salisbury to Waterloo services are being diverted via Southampton.

"A train shuttle service is in operation between Basingstoke and Andover and a bus shuttle service is running between Andover and Salisbury."
