Pipe bomb thrown into parked car 'No idea' why bomb thrown in car
(about 2 hours later)
Police have now said that a device thrown into a parked car in Londonderry on Monday night was a pipe bomb. A householder has said he has absolutely no idea why a car parked outside his home in Londonderry was attacked with a pipe bomb.
The rear window of a Mini parked at Hatmore Park was smashed when the object was thrown in at about 2200 BST. The device, which failed to explode, was thrown into his son's girlfriend's Mini in Hatmore Park on Monday night.
It failed to explode but caused smoke damage to the vehicle. The police said they have yet to establish a motive. The man, who did not want to be identified, said he initially thought the wind had blown a bin over.
"I was going to bed and heard a thump. I looked out and saw a flash, and I knew somebody had thrown something."
"I looked out, and saw the smoke.
"I went and got an extinguisher but it wasn't on fire, it was just smoke damaged.
"CID came up then and told me it was a pipe bomb," he said.
The police said they have yet to establish a motive for the attack.
