It's notable that the Lib Dem leader starts his speech with Afghanistan - in the last week the party has hardened up their line on the war, saying explicitly that unless the government changes the strategy in Afghanistan, then British troops should be withdrawn. It's not clear how he'd determine that the strategy had changed to the party's liking, but Mr Clegg is trying to create a dividing line between the Lib Dems and the other two main parties on Afghanistan. The party is well aware that it's objection to the Iraq was an electoral advantage for them in 2005.It's notable that the Lib Dem leader starts his speech with Afghanistan - in the last week the party has hardened up their line on the war, saying explicitly that unless the government changes the strategy in Afghanistan, then British troops should be withdrawn. Nick Clegg says he wants to be Prime Minister - the party wants to get across a sense of ambition, and the scale of what Mr Clegg wants to achieve. They say their own internal polling suggests the next election is 'wide open' . They won't show us the polling yet, or tell us how they have done it, but they obviously believe there is more up for grabs than you would imagine if you just read the national polls. Realistically though, for them to reach a situation where Nick Clegg had any hope of really becoming Prime Minister, the Lib Dems would have to make a truly mammoth electoral advance. Few in Bournemouth think they have anything like the resources or the number of candidates they'd need to do that.Nick Clegg says he wants to be Prime Minister - the party wants to get across a sense of ambition, and the scale of what Mr Clegg wants to achieve. It has been a bumpy week for the party's leader. He had to water down some of his proposals to get them through the conference yesterday. And several of his senior team have criticised him openly. Here he tries to laugh this off, and makes an appeal to his front benchers and activists to get behind him saying, 'let's always remember; we are in this together'. Here Mr Clegg makes an important part of his case that he started making at the start of conference. He believes that the Labour party is finished, which allows, he believes, an opportunity for the Lib Dems to pick up votes from disgruntled left of centre voters. He wants voters to see him as a replacement for Labour, a credible alternative opposition to David Cameron. This fits in to the party's strategy of trying to pick up votes in seats in the suburbs of northern cities like Liverpool and Newcastle where the Lib Dems run the councils. But the accusation that Labour has 'betrayed a generation' is strong language. Here Mr Clegg makes an important part of his case that he started making at the start of conference. And outlines the party's promise to find internships or guarantees for the under 25 s within 90 days of them losing their job.
