Family deaths fall-out continues

The fall-out from the deaths of Fiona Pilkington and Francecca Hardwick continues in the day's newspapers. <a class="inlineText" href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2009/sep/28/fiona-pilkington-inquest-disability-hate">The Guardian considers whether the deaths will be a "Stephen Lawrence moment",</a> marking a step forward in the recognition of "disability hate crime". The charity, Mencap, accuses the police of failing to take seriously the bullying experienced by people with learning disabilities. Mencap says it takes a death for the issue to gain serious attention. He suggests Lord Mandelson merely "dazzled" his comrades for "a few magical moments". <a class="inlineText" href="http://www.dailyexpress.co.uk/posts/view/130686">The Daily Express claims what it calls "EU snoopers"</a> are "pressing for sinister new powers". These would allow them to examine the bank account transactions of every taxpayer in Britain. Bletchley bonus <a class="inlineText" href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1216583/Ed-Balls-spends-3m-office-makeover--including-massage-room-Muslim-prayer-area.html">The Daily Mail covers a £3m "luxury refit"</a> at the Department for Children, Schools and Families and contrasts it with £2bn cuts proposed for schools. Its report claims a "makeover" of the central London offices will include the creation of a massage room for staff. The Times reports that swimmers off the Devon coast have been warned not to go near dolphins, that could turn violent. It is believed a porpoise washed up at Brixham was killed with a "powerful blow" from a bottlenose dolphin. <a class="inlineText" href="http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/huts-used-to-defeat-nazis-rescued-by-1634m-grant-1794695.html">The Independent hails a "breakthrough" in the fight to preserve</a> the wartime intelligence centre, Bletchley Park. Bletchley Park Trust has been awarded funding to help prepare an application for a £4.1m grant towards a £10m restoration project. |
