Families set 50-mile food target
http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/-/1/hi/scotland/south_of_scotland/8282846.stm Version 0 of 1. An experiment is under way in the Scottish Borders which will see 50 people try to source all their food from within a 50 mile radius of home. The Tweedgreen initiative centres on Peebles and will last throughout the month of October. Organisers hope it will show how eating local food can help to do "the least possible damage" to the environment. A directory has been put together of food suppliers and all the volunteers are being encouraged to keep a diary. One of the organisers, Rachael Millsom, said: "We are delighted that so many people have come forward to challenge themselves to eating only local food for this month. "We hope this challenge will make people more aware of the environmental, health and local economic benefits of choosing to buy locally produced food." Among those taking part is Scottish Borders councillor Catriona Bhatia. She has urged other people to consider participating, even just for one day. The event is being launched at the Leckie Church Hall in Peebles on Thursday. A celebration banquet is planned at the end of the event for everybody taking part. |
