With about 20% of ballots counted Pasok has more than 43% of the vote. PM Costas Karamanlis's ruling conservative New Democracy party has 36.2%. Conservative Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis admitted defeat after official projections and exit polls gave Pasok a clear majority.
If government projections and exit polls are confirmed, Pasok will have an absolute majority in parliament. With some 20% of ballots counted it had more than 43% of the vote, to 36% for Mr Karamanlis's New Democracy party.
Official results are not expected to be announced for several hours. Pasok needs 43% to have an absolute majority. It has spent more than five years in opposition.
But if this trend continues Pasok will return to office after more than five years.

But New Democracy members said the polls were far from conclusive.
