Indian high commissioner to Afghanistan Jayant Prasad said the watchtower and some other portions of the embassy had suffered some damage in the explosion. Nirupama Rao, India's foreign secretary told reporters, he believed "the suicide bomb was directed against the Indian embassy".
He said the blast, which occurred at 0827 local time (0353 GMT), appeared to be the work of a suicide bomber. Three Indian paramilitary troops guarding the embassy received minor shrapnel injuries, he said.
