The militants give the impression of having regrouped quickly after the death of their top commander, Baitullah Mehsud, in a suspected US drone strike in August. Inside, heavily-armed members of the Pakistani Rangers have been deployed.
They have equally quickly graduated from hitting easy civilian targets to storming high-security installations with a view to taking hostages and starting a long-drawn out stand-off. They have also displayed their ability to launch simultaneous attacks to prove their level of motivation, training and resources. Local people have told us that everyone is very scared in Lahore.
