Anti-Islamic extremism march off

A planned protest by the Welsh Defence League (WDL) in Newport has been cancelled, say Gwent Police.

Members had been due to gather at John Frost Square, Newport, next Saturday.

The cancellation follows a protest by about 200 people in opposition to a WDL demonstration against Islamic extremism in Swansea last Saturday.

Around 60 members of the WDL were involved in the march and the two groups converged, with 200 police, some on horses, keeping the groups apart.

One man, 25, was arrested for a racially aggravated public order offence.
